An award-winning US hairdresser has returned from Afghanistan where she had been teaching ten Afghan women the tricks of the trade.

Judith Reid, who has been cutting hair for 25 years, says the trip had been "the greatest adventure of my lifetime" and that the trainees were "hungry for education".

Speaking at a luncheon at the Radisson Inn in Madison, the stylist told fellow guests that she now hopes to start up a school and salon in Surat, the Afghan town that she visited.

She said: "Before I went, I had a picture in my mind of what it would be like.

"But once I was there, I got the real picture and I was amazed at the love put into my heart for that country and its people."

Hair salons in the US donated equipment and styling tools for her to take with her on the trip which allowed her to teach the women some intricate techniques.

She said that although she had only planned to teach haircutting, when she arrived, her students asked if she would also teach them how to apply make-up.
