Stereotypes prevail as girls dream of hairdressing

Hairdressers - 11/08/2006 14:25:17

Gender stereotypes are alive and well with 12 per cent of 11 to 14-year-old girls wanting to be hairdressers or beauticians when they grew up, according to a new study.

The City and Guilds' Youth Aspiration Index found that the number of future hairdressers rose to 18 per cent in the 15 to 18 female age group.

Unsurprisingly, boys tended to favour being a professional sportsman as their preferred career choice, with over a quarter of those questioned wanting to be a footballer.

However, the second annual study of young people's ambitions found that there is a new breed of teenager emerging who is willing to work long hours to achieve their goals over making easy money.

According to City and Guilds, doing a job that they want to do, like hairdressing, is more important to today's teenagers than getting a large pay cheque and is an attribute that should be praised.

Keith Brooker, director of group markets and products at City and Guilds, said: "Nowadays, true job satisfaction and happiness is about fulfilling your full potential, tapping into your own creativity and feeling that you can make a difference.

"As we spend so much time at work, it's important that we enjoy what we do and build on the skills that we're good at."

Lat year, City and Guilds launched the Real You campaign which aimed to give teenagers a better understanding of their choices and demonstrate that vocational training, like hairdressing, can be a route to success.
