National Hairdressers Day to highlight dermatitis

Hairdressers - 20/11/2006 16:07:22

This year's National hairdressers Day will be supporting the Health and Safety Executive's (HSE's) Bad Hand Day? aimed at cutting dermatitis among salon workers.

The skin disease affects hundreds of hair stylists across the UK leaving many of them unable to work.

To highlight the issue, November 21st will be National Hairdressing Day where stylists are urged to prevent themselves from getting dermatitis by following a good skin care regime.

This involves wearing disposable non-latex gloves for all wet-work. The Bad Hand Day? campaign aims to make the wearing of gloves standard practice and to encourage customers to demand that professionals wear gloves when washing or colouring their hair.

Currently there are 130,000 hairdressers working in the UK and it is estimated that up to 50 per cent could be affected by work-related dermatitis. The disease, which causes painful dryness and cracking of the skin on the hands, is a result of too much exposure to shampoos and chemicals.

To mark National Hairdressing day, celebrity hair colourist Jo Hansford will join HSE's Programme Director, Jane Willis in press conference at the L'Oreal Professional Academy.
