A historic building in Croydon, London, is being turned into a hairdressers after it has lain empty for months, it has been reported.

The Croydon Advertiser says that the building, which used to be an off-licence, will now be refurbished into a trendy new ladies hair salon and three small flats.

A council spokesman told the paper: "This application sensitively preserves the design of the building and ensures that access is given to protect items of archaeological interest."

Residents have said they are pleased with the decision to revamp the Grade II-listed building, parts of which date back to 1600. The empty building has recently been targeted by yobs and has become a haven for anti-social groups.

Croydon police are now cracking down on young people who cause trouble in the area after being given the names of a number of youths wanted on suspicion of vandalising buses.

The Croydon Advertiser launched a campaign to stop vandals defacing buses in the area which has cost transport operators thousands to clean up.

The paper published 24 images of youths taken on the 466 route from Caterham-on-the-Hill to Addington via South Croydon.
