Johnny Depp is to swap bloodthirsty pirates for murderous hairdressers when he stars as Sweeney Todd in a film version of the classic Stephen Sondheim musical.
Reuniting with director Tim Burton following the huge success of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Depp is reported to be playing legendary London barber Todd, who killed his customers by slashing their throats with a razor.
The original Sweeney Todd musical was a Broadway hit back in 1979, but Burton now plans to bring the show to the big screen and has asked 43-year-old Depp to take the lead role.
Since it's an adaptation of a musical it's likely that Depp will have to sing in the movie. Though whether fans will get to hear his real voice or whether a professional will be drafted in to provide the voiceover remains to be seen.
One thing's for sure, Depp will probably do for hairdressers what he did for pirates, turning the world of hairdressing into something rather more glamorous.
Filming on the movie is due to start in early 2007 before it is released in cinemas at the end of next year.
