Warwickshire florists triumph in national competition

A pair of young florists from Warwickshire have beaten off competition from floristry students across Britain to come out top in a national skills contest, the Coventry Evening Telegraph reports.

Lyndsey Lorne, a student at Warwickshire College, scooped the gold medal in the experienced category at the Society of Floristry's Smithers Oasis Academy competition at Tatton Park in Cheshire.

Lyndsey, 26, had to create a variety of unique, modern arrangements in front of a live audience. Her beautiful designs wowed the judges and she was awarded first place.

She told the Coventry Evening Telegraph: "It was really nerve-racking because this time we were part of the exhibition. We were behind a fence and being watched by all the crowd. I haven't been used to that."

Emma Cobb, 21 and also a student at Warwickshire College, was named runner-up in the novice category.

Brian Cook, programme area manager for horticulture and floristry at Warwickshire College, told the newspaper that the young florists' achievements were great news for the floristry team at the college.

"It was our first time so it's even better. No other college has ever got a first in one class and a second in the other class," he said.
