Florists recreate pudding battle

Florists - 07/07/2006 16:13:57

Florists are to recreate the historic black pudding competition in flower form for the Royal Horticultural Society's national flowerbed competition.

The pudding competition that takes place in Ramsbottom every year consists of Lancashire folk throwing black puddings in tights at Yorkshire puddings.

Participants' aim is to knock as many Yorkshire puddings off a platform in one go, with the winner declared after two attempts.

The competition represents the War of the Roses. As legend has it, when soldiers ran out of ammunition they began to throw food at each other instead.

Florists have recreated the scene by planting flowers in the form of the two counties' emblems, the white rose for Yorkshire and the red rose for Lancashire.

There is also a pink section in between the two emblems that represents where the two counties meet at the Pennines.

Lancashire's red rose will have a flowery hand planted into it by the florists to demonstrate how Lancashire people throw their black puddings at the Yorkshire puddings.

The florists will unveil the design in around two weeks' time at Cheshire's Tatton flower show.
