Florist fights back against alley yobs

Florists - 18/12/2006 16:03:22

A florist in Wakefield, Yorkshire, has had to pay out over £3,000 for hi-tech security after teenage delinquents and drunks constantly ruined an alleyway next to the shop.

Owner Pauline Shipley told the local press that the alleyway, which is used to gain access to the high street in the town of Horbury, had become a magnet for unconscientious youths and drinkers looking for a toilet.

She said there were often teenage gangs meeting in the alleyway to drink and even have sex, while adults pouring out of the local pubs use it as a urinal and rubbish bin.

But the store has been fighting back against the vandals, installing a new modern gate security system to keep them out, at a cost of over £3,000.

Ms Shipley told Wakefield Today: "It's a shame I have to spend money on such security measures, but something has to be done as things are getting out of hand."

Blackburn Florist in has been in the high street for 25 years under the same ownership, with the local having a combined total of 80 years experience making flower arrangements for all kinds of occasions.
