A Manchester-based food business has become a leader in environmental practice after it was awarded a Northwest Business Awards.
The Best Environmental Practice SME award was given to Manchester Rusk Company (MRC) for its contribution to reducing energy use in the making of its sauces, seasoning, marinades and glazes for the food industry.
David Wheeler, production manager at MRC, commented: "Through our own innovation, and through sourcing government funding, we have managed to reduce the impact this company makes on the environment, reduced overheads dramatically and helped to safeguard our own manufacturing future."
The company has managed to reduce its energy costs by 60 per cent, landfill waste by 95 per cent and fuel costs by 50 per cent.
All the efforts of the group contribute to the reduction of 12 tonnes of carbon emissions per year, a stunning result for the business that started traded in Sharston in 2003.
"Good environmental practices should be at the heart of everything a business does- both in terms of environmental impact and cost reduction," Mr Wheeler added.
Environment-friendly packaging machinery, air system, lighting and computing system should reduce the carbon footprint of the small enterprise even further.
MRC has also received the Envirowise Award in the "Preserving our Environment" category at the Northwest Food Awards as well as a National Energy Efficiency Award.
