CBI: 'Business support should be prominent in Westminster'

The Small Business Service (SBS) should be given more power to implement effective change to business support and networking, the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) has said.
According to the CBI, the SBS should be given the authority to promote the needs of small enterprises and the power to audit policies passed in Westminster that affect entrepreneurs.
It wants to see the SBS given powers similar to its American counterpart, the Small Business Administration, which will allow it to scrutinise other departments' work and evaluate the amount of business support they offer.
Richard Lambert, director general of the CBI, said: "The Government knows that successful small businesses are vital to the UK's long-term prosperity.
"The Small Business Service should have the power to audit the work of other government departments which have an impact on small and growing businesses."
Alistair Darling, the secretary of state for trade and industry, is expected to call a review of the SBS in the coming weeks and the CBI claims that this is the perfect opportunity to make sure there is adequate business support and networking in the UK.
