Watch out for cash cowboys

Consumers should be wary of cowboy builders who only accept cash payments, claims Trading Standards.

According to the government organisation, homeowners need to be aware that using unreliable builders and other tradesmen could lead to more costs and half completed jobs.

Figures from Direct Line show that people in the UK are paying an extra £529 million a year on building work, with one in 50 having to employ a second builder to finish the job.

Speaking to BBC One's Breakfast show, Sarah Smith from Trading Standards said: "You should definitely not just choose somebody at random.

"We always advise trying to get a recommendation first and definitely don't employ anybody on the doorstep.

"And you should really be cautious of tradesmen who want to be paid in cash."

Trading Standards advises that consumers should pay by credit or debit card wherever possible as it provides additional protection on top of statutory rights.

Ms Smith also advised homeowners to clearly specify what work they want carried out and to make sure that the builder is clear on what you require from them.
