Scottish start-ups on the rise

Scotland is showing a healthy increase in start-up businesses, including hotels, builders and retail services, according to new figures from the Committee of Scottish Clearing Bankers (CSCB).
Second quarter recreational, personal and community-based business start-ups increased from 587 in 2005 to 950 in the second quarter of this year.
Manufacturing, hotels, construction and agricultural services also saw a healthy number of start-up companies appearing in the second quarter of 2006.
The figures come from banks that have been approached by entrepreneurs and businessmen looking to open new accounts for their firms.
They have revealed a seven per cent increase in the number of businesses opening their doors from 2005 to 2006 and a 5.5 per cent increase in the first quarter of this year.
Professor Charles Munn of the CSCB said: "The number of start-ups for second quarter 2006 continues to be encouraging, representing as it does the third consecutive second-quarter increase since 2004."
Last November accountants Grant Thornton claimed that Scottish start ups had been forming at half the English rate for over a decade.
