Rooney could have been a builder

Manchester United hero Wayne Rooney has said that if he had not been a talented footballer he would probably have ended up as a builder.

The 21-year-old football star, who has been playing professionally since his teenage years, admitted that kicking a ball around is the only thing he has ever been able to do well.

Despite now earning thousands of pounds a week playing for the Premiership club, when asked what he would do if he wasn't a footballer, he said: "I'd probably be unemployed, although a lot of my mates from school are builders so maybe something like that. It's difficult for me to say though. I love football, it's all I've ever done."

Rooney also revealed that he is determined to be a good role model and hopes that he inspires young people follow their dreams and aim high.

He said: "When I was younger my role models were Duncan Ferguson, Alan Shearer and Michael Owen. Now I'm in that position I've become more conscious."

The young star had the country on tenterhooks before this year's World Cup after a broken bone in his foot threatened to prevent him from taking part.
