More work for builders as housing demand grows

Builders across the UK have seen their workloads increase over the last few months as the demand for new housing grows.
According to a new survey from the Federation of Master Builders (FMB), one on three construction workers reported a rise in business in the three months to September compared to the three months before.
The FMB said the private housing sector was mostly responsible for this increase, with new build and repair work both continuing at a steady pace.
However the summer months are always the busiest for builders, and while this year's figures do show a rise in workload, they are somewhat disappointing in relation to the growth seen during the previous six summers.
Ian Davis, director general of the FMB, explained: "While it is encouraging to see growth return to the market, a lasting upswing still remains uncertain.
"Certain parts of the market are still struggling, and the impression that sluggish conditions will continue is reinforced by findings regarding workload in the next quarter and enquiries for future work."
The FMB said the social housing sector proved particularly weak during the July to September quarter, as did the public, non-residential building sector.
