London to bring in foreign builders

The Greater London Authority (GLA) wants to bring in more foreign builders to help boost the capital's house building capacity, according to reports.

According to the GLA, the building sector in London and the rest of the UK is predominantly domestic and there is scope to widen the industry to bring in foreign developers and help bolster the capital's ability to build homes.

And David Lunts, executive director for policy and partnerships at the GLA has claimed that the UK has done little "to market itself" to foreign builders interested in working on property in the UK.

News of the plan comes as rumours have begun to circulate that the government could set builders targets regarding the number of rooms, not homes, which they build.

Judith Armitt, the newly-installed chief executive of the Thames Gateway, claim that communities secretary Ruth Kelly wants to introduce the new scheme as a way of securing the amount of family housing being built.

Speaking to Inside Housing, Ms Armitt said: "One of the mechanisms by which that might be achieved is by aiming for the number of habitable rooms being developed rather than looking at the number of dwellings."
