Many small companies are failing to claim business rate relief worth around £400 million, according to a firm of accountants.
Bolton-based Bentleys Chartered Accountants has raised concerns that many businesses could be neglecting to claim the correct allowances because they are unaware of the scheme.
It is estimated that around 48 per cent of businesses are eligible for the grant, which could reduce bills by around £2,500 and help reduce total operating costs.
John Shaw, a partner at the firm, told the Bolton Evening News: "We are urging local businesses to contact their accountant or their local council to determine how much of a tax break they could be entitled to.
"When small businesses are facing rising costs and may be finding it increasingly difficult to maintain sustainability, there is help available which could see their rates plummet," he added.
Any companies that may wish to check their eligibility for the relief are being advised to contact their local authority for further details.
