Accountants in the British Isles are multiplying at a tremendous speed as more and more people enter the profession.
According to official figures there is now one qualified accountant for every 240 people in the UK and Ireland, making Britain's accounting profession the largest per head of population in the world.
At the end of 2005 there were some 265,000 members belonging to Britain's six main professional accounting bodies, 37,000 more than there were in 2000.
The Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (Acca) has seen the biggest growth in the number of new accountants qualifying. At the end of 2005 it had just over 59,000 members, 30 per cent more than it had just six years ago.
Stuart Riddell of Acca told the Herald: "The main ingredients contributing to our success are the flexibility of the qualification, our engagement with more employers and the new services we can offer them such as e-learning and our graduate partner scheme."
