Richard House, London’s first children’s hospice, is located in the Docklands area of east London in Newham. We provide services for children and their families who are mainly from east, north, south-east and central London. Richard House was the first children’s hospice in London. It began providing support services in 2000 and we have 150 children registered with us.
We provide short breaks/respite care for children and young people aged 0-19 years old who are not expected to live into adulthood. The three functions of short breaks/respite care are to provide the child or young person with an opportunity to enjoy social interaction and leisure facilities; to support the family in the care of their child; to provide opportunities for siblings to have fun and receive support in their own right.
We provide end-of-life care to help children and young people with advanced, progressive, incurable illness to live as well as possible until they die. It enables the needs of both patient and family to be met through the last phase of life and into bereavement. It includes management of pain and other symptoms and provision of psychological, social, spiritual and practical support.
Children with a wide range of conditions or illnesses can use Richard House. They are usually defined as having life-limiting or life-threatening conditions or potentially life-threatening disabilities. The children suffer from a variety of illnesses, including degenerative genetic conditions, cancer, or are waiting for major organ transplants.
There is no charge to families using our service and we need to raise £1.8 million this year in voluntary donations to keep Richard House open.

The Best of Newham wants to help support Richard House in 2007. Every time a new member signs up to this website, half of the sign-up fee will be donated to Richard House.
Once £10,000 has been raised, The Best of Newham will host an event to raise more money and present the total funds to Richard House.
