Our Irish setter had had a confusing start to life with several owners before the age of 10 months. He seemed unable to understand or carry out the simplest commands. When out walking I had to take him to places where we would be unlikely to meet other dogs as he would not return and some owners became (justifiably) irate; one man even hit him with a stick! Further, at the end of a walk, he would refuse to be caught and only after some extended, exhausting and embarrassing 'chase me' games could we get him on the lead again. At my wits end, I contacted Mort. I answered the door to a friendly, knowledgeable, non-judgemental man who in one session sorted out most of our problems. We had a further session which was the most fun I have had in ages - running around the park being chased by a setter trailing a 15metre leash!! Mort explained what the dog was thinking and why he was behaving the way he was and provided strategies to cure problems.Thank you Mort for saving my sanity!
What a difference... I have two dogs both with very different temperaments but my main concern was my Akita cross who had taken to lunging at people and dogs whilst out on a walk and his recall was as and when he decided he wanted to come back!! I had lost confidence walking him and as is quite often the case had taken to walking my dogs at odd times and to places where there was little chance of meeting other dogs. After working with Mort (thank heavens for the recommendation). Mort what can I say. It was a pleasure to meet you and to work with you. Thank you for showing me how to work with and be aware of both Ruben and Willows needs. We are now the envy of other dog walkers when we are out and about as they are so well behaved. I would highly recommend you and your skills as a dog trainer to anyone who will listen.
Mort is teaching us to train our dog, not only are we learnning a lot but Mort is also a really nice chap (which is very important) who never patronises or gets too technical (also very crucial) I would have no hesitation in recommending him to anyone as I have every confidence in his knowledge and experience with dogs and am more than happy to trust his methods and we are seeing good results after just two sessions with very lively and excitable young Jack Russell
We had put two years' hard work into training our young labrador but still wondered if she would ever learn to come back reliably when off the lead. An independent, confident and strong-willed dog, we were anxious that we would lose her or that she would run into the road. Mort has worked with us over the last few months to build a really successful recall method. He excels at interpreting the dog's behaviour and has really built our confidence in handling our dog. We would recommend him to anyone.
Mort came highly recommended and with good reason. He has helped us and our rescue dog AJ to master the basics; Mort spent time to talk through the logic behind the techniques we used, which helped us to understand and use them more effectivly. When we first got AJ we thought perhaps we had bitten off more than we could chew, but thanks to Mort's help we have made lots of progress and are now able to confidently take him places we would have never thought possible. Cannot recommend Mort highly enough. He helped us with our Bichon, Dexter, who was a nightmare to walk. People even comment on how well behaved he is now! The icing on the cake is being able to let Dexter let off the lead and actually be able to get him to come back, something I truly thought would NEVER happen. Mort also helped resolve a problem with early morning barking which used to wake the whole house; and probably next door if they were honest! We have what we thought was a very challenging 6 month old short haired German pointer. Mort has visited us twice and the results have been fantastic. We have gained so much from Mort and the difference in our dog Sophie has been amazing which has been mainly been down to Mort showing us what she is doing and how to handle various situations. We have a very lively and active Cocker Spaniel Puppy, Digby, who loves his walks. However, he did not like being on a lead; he pulled and strained himself to get anywhere. Mort came to see him and gave us a session on stopping this behaviour. He took us out on a walk, a normal route we would take and showed us a new lead and new technique. It worked and Digby is now very well behaved on his lead and a pleasure to take for a walk! I would highly recommend Mort Smith to anyone looking for a quality reasonably priced dog trainer.
I can now walk my 3 yr old rottweiler, Winston, past dogs - on the same side of the street! After one session with Mort, the nightmare of Winston lungeing and growling at other dogs across the road has gone. So has my frustration and embarrassment! What an outstanding trainer and genuinely nice guy. I would happily recommend Mort to anyone with dog behaviour issues.
Mort helped us train our german shepherd Kaiser (and trained us!!) The problem walking was solved in the first visit, such a relief not being dragged around anymore!! We are very grateful to Mort for the help he gave us in gaining control of Jess who loves all the family but likes to escort 'strangers' out through the gate with a little nip! as she is a collie/greyhound cross, this behaviour is not only unwanted but a bit scary! I highly recommend Mort Smith and his methods of dog training. He has helped me gain control of my rescue collie/greyhound who loves all members of the household but doesn't want to share them with anyone else! I now feel confident that I have much more control when she tries to round up 'strangers' and see them off with a little nip!
We had a 7 month (now 9 months) old standard schnauzer who was a nightmare to walk, and insisted on tearing around our lounge via the furniture and barking furioulsy at any visitors to the front door. Schnauzers are renound to be a stubborn breed and stubborn Tilli certainly was. Mort helped me enormously in being able to control Tilli and she now walks like a dream, no longer uses the furniture as a launching pad and calms down within minutes of any visitor entering the house. All of the tactics Mort showed me were practiced relentlessly over 6/8 weeks and we now have a very happy dog and two happy owners. Thank you Mort Jill & Bob
Not only is Mort a really nice guy but he worked with us to find solutions that worked for us and our dog (a 3 year old re homed German Shepherd). It wasn't a case of "Do it this way", it was working with us to find the right solution. It was so refreshing to hear a dog trainer say that he didn't have all the answers, and that there wasn't just one way to solve the problems. We felt really listened to, not a case of someone coming along telling us what to do. Can't recommend Mort enough.

What a fab guy! Mort helped us with Jedi - Baskerville hound (well, he is when he sees other dogs!), and consequently, for the first time in 6 years, we were able to take Jedi on holiday with us to Snowdonia! really friendly and professional man who worked wonders with our 'wild thing' Lexy giving us advice on problems such as sleep patterns,lead pulling aggression towards other dogs, cats,bikes balls etc and a complete embarrassment to walk,after just a few sessions there was a vast improvement not just notice by us but commented on by others.

We have a lovely rescue Collie/Spaniel cross. Lovely that is until he meets a dog.... Then all hell lets loose! Mort has definitely helped us to have more control over Ozzie in these situations and also more confidence. Ozzie's problems wont go away over night, but we do take him to more places now which previously would have been too stressful. Ozzie is very pleased to see Mort when we bump into him - a good indicator that his methods are firm but kind.
Having worked with Mort as a Police doghandler for almost 10 years I would highly recommend Mort to aid in the training of any dog.
