The Chesterfield Canal passes right through Worksop
A few years ago the whole length of the canal from Chesterfield, through Worksop and Retford to the Trent was virtually derelict but now is increasingly popular with pleasure boaters, walkers, and anglers alike.
The Chesterfield Canal Trust Limited is a charitable organisation run entirely by volunteers to promote the full restoration and development of the Chesterfield Canal along its length, including Worksop.
The canal is navigable from its junction with the river Trent at West Stockwith (near Gainsborough) through Retford and Worksop to the Norwood tunnel entrance at Kiveton Park.
The Trust is engaged in working from Chesterfield towards Worksop restoring and opening up the canal to the tunnel whilst plans are in hand for re-opening Norwood tunnel to restore the link between Chesterfield and the canal system.
The Trust also campaigns for the Rother Valley Link, to join the Chesterfield Canal above Worksop with the Sheffield and South Yorkshire Navigation to form a through route.
Thanks to the recent improvements to The Chesterfield Canal upstream from Worksop, more boats are passing through Worksop. As the restoration and the canal's popularity grows, this can only help Worksop.
The flight of locks between Shireoaks and Kiveton Park re-opened in 2003 is one of the most beautiful stretches of canal in the country and is a delight for walkers’ boaters and nature lovers.
The Chesterfield Canal Trust, charitable organisation, has over 1000 members and runs friendly bi-monthly meetings for members and people interested in the canal.
Volunteers help by joining regular canal restoration working parties, running two trip boats at Retford and Chesterfield and a heritage FMC workboat that is on loan from British Waterways.
The trust also has a Promotions and Exhibitions trailer manned by volunteers, which attends public events both locally, and nationally to publicise the Chesterfield Canal and the work of the Trust.
