About Boscobel House
Built in 1632, Boscobel House is one of Wolverhampton's oldest historical buildings and stately homes, orginally inhabited by the Giffard family as a working farm. The family were devout Roman Catholics, living at a time when anyone associated with the religion was persecuted. It therefore became a secret shelter to both Catholic priests and followers in times of need.
The house is however best known as the young King Charles II hiding place after his defeat at Worcester, the final battle of the Civil War. After his father's execution, young Charles was forced to flee after his unsuccessful attempt to assume the throne. It was during this time that Charles sought refuge at Boscobel House, after his way was blocked by Cromwell's troops at the River Severn. He first hid in the tree now known as the Royal Oak and in a priest-hole within the attic of Boscobel house. He then escaped to France by travelling in disguise and stopping at safe houses across the country.
