Oh my goodness do I want to go somewhere special for Valentine’s Day this year. After my experiences last year, I am looking for a repeat performance. Last year was so romantic and an experience that I thought I could never have again, but as the experience has faded, I’m looking for round 2!
First on my list are the Winter Wonders of the Italian Alps, specifically the Friulian Dolomites, Carnic Alps and Julian Alps. Here it is still possible to ski far from crowds and noise, and still have adventures and fun.
So, Friulian Dolomites…hmmm…two skiable areas one downhill for beginners, one uphill for experts…Sauris, the pearl of the Carnic Alps which has lakes and fir forests and even an ancient village for atmosphere…so romantic. Still, I wouldn’t mind the action packed Snow Park Arena or Piancavallo’s Snowpark with its half pipes, jumps and rails as well as ski lift facilities or even Collato where a ski run has been fully dedicated to freestyle for both snowboarders and skiers. So many choices!
Maybe this year I should look for something somewhat more sedate…
Horse drawn sleighs in silent forests…along the charming trails of the Tarvisio area or in the valley of Sauris and then back to a huge log fire and a large Bombadino! This delightful concoction of biscotti and whipped cream, Advocaat, brandy and hot espresso, is a decadent treat to complete the experience after a day out in the cold.
Intersperse that with toboggan runs and husky snow sled races to get the juices flowing….what an experience.
Oh and one more thing, I can’t forgo the spa at Arta Terme a few kilometres away from the Zoncolan, the perfect end to a romantic Valentine’s Day getaway…..still tomorrow is another day and who knows where I will be heading off ….watch this space!
