One of the most traditional attractions on Weymouth Beach, Maggie Aldridge’s group of donkeys has again fought off competitors to take the title of “National Best Trimmed Feet Award” and also came runner up in “Britain’s Best Group of Beach Donkey”.

The Awards were presented by the Mayor of Weymouth and Portland on Tuesday 22nd September 2009.

The competition, run annually by the Donkey Sanctuary based in Sidmouth, Devon, aims to recognise high standards of animal welfare practice by selecting the best donkeys and their owners at regional and national levels.

Prizes are based on and awarded for the donkey’s welfare which includes their health, strength and conformation, their gentle and placid natures, and above all, their happiness in their work.

Weymouth and Portland Borough Council, Leisure, Tourism and Community Facilities Brief Holder, Cllr Brendan Webster said, "this is a great achievement for Maggie and her beautiful donkeys. They are a huge asset to Weymouth Beach and now have the stature of being part of the resort’s heritage. Maggie cares for her donkeys as though they were part of her family and they give many young families a great experience in return. We are very proud of Maggie’s efforts and this significant award will certainly once again raise the profile and awareness of the Weymouth Beach Donkeys”.
