Haito the Tree Wizard, in keeping with Playbox's desire to make its 20th anniversary season more involving for audiences, will be an interactive production which creates an unique Japanese experience for young audiences. It will give them a chance, before the traditional tale of Haito is performed, to participate in the ancient art of the tea ceromony, learn words of Japanese and sample traditions, games and food.
Old Japanese tales are currently popular sources for modern films with both The Ring and The Grudge based on eastern supernatural themes. Haito uses masks, colouful costumes, music, dance and magical effects to tell an old folk legend about ghosts and spirits coming into contact with the human world. Playbox's Jinks company of adult actors will re-imagine a Japanese theatre being installed in the main auditorium of The Dream Factory - a wooden floored acting space and the children sitting barefoot on cushions around it so they will really be able to be part of the Japanese experience as they enjoy this unusual play.
