If there is even just one person in your organisation that you spend a lot of time talking about, then you also need to speak to The HR Dept!
People are the most valuable and amongst the most expensive resource, of any and every business. From recruitment to retirement – and at every stage in between – they can prove to be your most valuable asset . . . or your worst nightmare!
And if you’re spending a lot of time talking about an employee, you already know the reason ‘Why’ – but as you’re only talking and not doing something about it, you also know, you should be taking some form of action!
But what? When? How? – The consequences of getting it wrong are far-reaching and multi-layered.
And it’s not all about the ‘hiring and firing’ aspect either!
Many businesses cannot afford the ‘luxury’ of their own HR Department.
But with the ever-increasing complexities of employment law, health & safety regulations, training & development requirements, etc, it’s an area that cannot be ignored, whether you have a single part-time or casual employee, or a small but growing team of manual workers, sales and administrative staff.
Identifying potential growth areas in your business is one thing. Strategy, planning and the implementation of such growth is not just something for ‘the big boys!’ And getting it right the first time, is far easier – and more cost-effective – than having to put it right, after the event.
Professional advice on Policies and Procedures, Recruitment and Selection, Employment Relationships, Engagement and Management, Health & Safety, Training & Development – and a myriad of other topics – some of which you may not even be aware of – is not something any sized business can afford to be without.
And now, it needn’t be!
The HR Department is a unique response to a growing need and demand identified within the small business sector.
HR advice and information on hand, on demand, wherever and whenever you need it, whatever trade, profession or specialism your business provides, without the expense of having to have your own in-house, full-time professionals on your payroll.
The HR Department is a nationally established organisation, providing a local and personal service, with unlimited access to an insured advice line for its members.
Meet Liza Carr, Director of The HR Department – South East Wales, covering Cwmbran, Pontypool, Merthyr Tydfil, Ystrad Mynach, Caerphilly, Pontypridd, Blackwood and surrounding towns.
A Chartered Member of the Institute of Personnel and Development, Liza has a BSc (Hons) Business and Finance degree, a ‘Level 3’ Coaching qualification with the Institute of Leadership and Management and more than 20 years’ experience in the field of Human Resources, application in both public and private sectors, for both business start-ups and larger organisations. She is part of a family run business, which provides a real understanding of the HR issues facing small business owners.
Working in partnership with other valued and trusted partners, Liza can also provide pay-roll services, credit-checking services, CRB checks, HR Management Systems, employee benefits scheme and employee assistance programmes.
Born in Gibralter, Liza spent the very early part of her life in Plymouth and Portsmouth – her father was in the Navy at that time - before the family moved to Cwmbran – where her father was a fireman, for another thirty-years. Her mother, known locally as ‘Mrs Tufty’ teaches road-safety to children, and Sarah, Liza’s sister, lives in Bahrain.
Liza lives in Llanyrafon with fiancé Graham – who runs his own Luxury Vehicle Chauffeuring Service – and son, James.
On leaving school, Liza’s first job was with The Employment Service, (later re-branded, ‘Job Centre Plus’) before becoming the Senior HR Executive for a national finance house based locally. During my time there, I had personally recruited and managed almost 80% of the total number of employees and managed a HR team of five. Liza was asked to join a new start-up company in the income protection market as a ‘People and Development Advisor’ with the role of establishing a HR function and associated procedures, before taking the opportunity to set up her own franchised operation with the HR Dept covering South East Wales.
“This was a real opportunity which I had no hesitation in seizing with both hands.” Says Liza. “Running my own business was something I had always aspired to do, and the way The HR Dept is set-up and administered, allowed me the freedom to do just that”.
I’m entirely independent – but with the added security of National back-up. If for any reason, I’m not available to take a calls, my clients can or will be (their choice!) diverted to one of my equally experienced and professional colleagues, who will have full access to my client-records, to provide the information or advice needed.
As an independent advisor, I’m not subject to any of the political or bureaucratic policies or procedures that may already be in place in larger businesses. I’m able to approach any given situation, with a complete, educated and informed ‘outside-looking-in’ perspective. Smaller businesses, which may not have any policies or procedures in place, benefit because they get the right information, from the very beginning. It’s a win-win situation!
I’ve always been a ‘people-person,’ I mix well, I’m a good listener and I’m always able to bring ‘balance’ to a situation. I work well on my own or as part of a team – and would never ask anything of anyone, that I wouldn’t be prepared or happy to do (if I could!) myself.
My aim is to support my clients, guide and encourage through growth, and be a part of their success. They can rely on me because I rely on them. And that’s the way it should be!”
Liza offers a no-obligation, FREE review of existing HR policies and procedures, or ‘a meeting, to get things started in that direction’ – either way, your first meeting with The HR Dept, won’t cost you a penny!
“Historically, all to often, a small-business employer would only seek HR advice after a situation had arisen and gotten out of their control. They learned the hard way that, ‘Prevention is better than court’. Today, there’s no need to let that kind of history repeat itself – And it doesn’t cost the earth in order to prevent it.”
The HR Dept – South East Wales, can be your own, bespoke HR Department, as and when you need it, ONLY when you need it.
“By the hour, by the day, or paying a monthly retainer. We’re as flexible as you need us to be.”
THE HR DEPARTMENT – PREVENTING PEOPLE PROBLEMS.

They are very professional, accurate and pro-active in their advice and services which allows us as a business to operate in line with current employment law and any changes that may occur.
A dedicated professional hands on approach for SME clients, taking away the worries of the intricacies of HR law and personnel procedures, thereby enabling them (us) to get on with their day job!
Since signing up to the HR Dept.’s Advice line with Liza Carr, it has become very clear that we at Ikaros Solar now have access to a wealth of HR advice and services. We have already managed to utilise many of these services including HR advice, HR policy/contract writing and a regular newsletter focusing on HR issues that are both relevant and topical. Although some HR is dealt with in-house, it is a real bonus to have the support of the HR Dept. for any areas that require expert attention. The advice line service represents real value for money and gives you a great peace of mind. I would not hesitate to recommend Liza to anyone and have in fact recommended her already.’ Office Manager, Ikaros Solar.
Deciding to employ Liza Carr from HR Dept. on a retainer basis has proven to be a very wise business decision. HR can be difficult and time consuming, simply getting in the way of trying to run a business. Having Liza’s sound and friendly advise whenever its needed (which has been quite often), has saved me time, headache and been cost effective. I highly recommend her services to anyone running a business. Director, H&B Supplies Ltd
We appointed Liza Carr of The HR Department in early 2012 as part of our continued expansion and drive to bring our administrative and managerial processes in line with best practice. Liza has been an invaluable resource to the company as we are able to call upon her expertise whenever an HR issue arises or we are uncertain how to handle a particular HR situation. It has also been particularly re-assuring to have the additional insurance cover that comes with the service which protects us against legal costs and tribunal awards.
Lizaâs support has been essential in ensuring that our company is taking the right actions in supporting staff at work, and her advice has been critical to ensuring the HR part of our business runs smoothly. Daren Crosbee, Plant Manager, UniTech Services Group
