Campaign to save SS Manxman from being scrapped

Just read this story and thought it would be a real shame if this wonderful piece of floating history is scrapped.  Hope all on the Isle of Man will get behind the campaign to save this ship.  As well as all the other arguments to save Manxman,  this has to be good way of raising the island's profile across..

The SOS Manxman Co charity has just been formed to save the SS Manxman, about to be scrapped at Pallion Shipyard, Sunderland.

A new home and use must be found for the Cammell Laird-built ship, Europe’s last passenger steamship.

The new trust, led by Wirral campaigner Patrick Toosey, of Oxton, wants everyone to help in the rescue.

Just read this story :- It is hoped Manxman will be a permanent floating conference centre linked to a new hotel in Birkenhead, near to where she was built.

Patrick said: “Manxman is a beautiful and historic ship which could be an emblem of regeneration for Birkenhead.

“Birkenhead doesn’t have a conference centre and this could kick-start waterfront regeneration.

“There would be nothing like this ship in Britain and she would attract business from across the UK.

We enjoy getting out and about and meeting people and feel very much part of the local community of the Isle of Man. The people warm and friendly and the pace of life is more laid back than across - it suits us just fine!
