During the Winter months your home is more at risk of flooding and damage than any other season as Mother Nature comes out in full force.

We have prepared some top tips to prepare your home for Winter:

Burst Pipes

Freezing weather is the time when pipes are most likely to burst.  You can avoid leaks and bursts as much as possible by:

  • Protecting your water pipes with insulation (lagging) particularly those on external walls.
  • Checking your loft insulation is thick and in good condition.
  • Keeping your home warm
  • Leaving your heating on low when you are away
  • Consider turning off your inside stop tap and draining the system so there is no water in the pipes to freeze if you are going away.
  • Get your boiler checked over.

Have a Flood Action Plan

If your property is at risk from flooding, take the following steps in preparation:

  • Prepare a flood plan of your property
  • Make sure you have access to sand bags to keep water out
  • Do you know how to turn off your gas and electric supply?
  • Does everyone in the house know where the stop tap is?
  • Make sure you always have the details of a good plumber to hand.
  • Register with Floodline to hear the latest Flood Warnings for your region.
  • In the unfortunate event that your home does experience flooding, Wrekin Removals and Self Storage offer self storage and removals solutions.

Snow

Remember that snow can cause problems too, blocking air vents, blowing into roof spaces and adding extra weight to roofs, conservatories and other structures.  Heavy snow may mean you can't get out so ensure you have snow shovels, rock salt and provisions.

Your Garden

Before windy weather arrives, check for loose tiles, slates and flashing.  Garden furniture and trampolines can become missiles in heavy winds so ensure they are weighted down sufficiently.

Home Insurance

Check to ensure your home insurance is in date and fully protects you against winter related damage.

As the days are getting shorter and the nights colder, start preparing your home for Winter today - you may be glad you did.
