So what causes these problems I hear you ask? Well, driving behaviour, particularly driving short distances, prevents the diesel particle filter from getting hot enough to completely burn the soot particles contained in the filter. Additionally, the automatic regeneration (where more diesel fuel is injected into the combustion area to reach a higher combustion temperature) will be reduced by city/town or stop/start motoring. The result is that excessive soot particle build up causes the filter to clog, resulting in failure indication from the OBD-system to the driver (warning light), power loss, an increase in fuel consumption, leading eventually to the total breakdown of the vehicle. Lack of awareness means that most drivers are completely unaware that their driiving habits will be causing problems - until of course the warning light comes on - which may be too late!
