How to plan your kitchen lighting

If you’re changing or updating your kitchen, you need to consider and plan your lighting effectively as electrics and fittings need to be installed at the start of the project before any plastering and decoration takes place.

Wiring Works in Telford provide all domestic and commercial electrical services including installations, design, inspection, PAT testing and Certification.  Taking pride in providing their customers with an excellent level of service, they provide the following advice on adding kitchen lighting to your home:

  • Try to zone your lighting according to its use e.g. task lighting (work tops), ambience lighting (dining) etc.
  • Installing ceiling lighting can be difficult, but you can illuminate a kitchen without ceiling lights e.g. using spotlights, down lighters, uplighters and strips that can be placed on or under kitchen units.
  • No matter how big or small your kitchen, you need task lighting to ensure chopping and cooking can be done safely and without shadows.
  • For the hob area, choose an extractor with four or more halogen lights.
  • If you have an island that you use for preparation, highlight it with pendant lamps combined with recessed down lighters.  You need to speak to a qualified electrician regarding this.
  • Consider sensor operated lighting, a great option when preparing food.  Drawer and cabinet lighting can also be operated on sensors, instantly coming on when the door is opened making items easier to find.
  • If you have a kitchen/diner set the rooms apart with ambience lighting.
  • If you have a period property or interesting features, such as an exposed brick wall, why not consider highlighting it with accent lighting that can be used to focus on a particular area or design element in the room.
