Families facing the challenges that follow a dementia diagnosis will have the chance to receive support from the Alzheimer’s Society at an upcoming memory cafe run by local home care company, Home Instead Sutton Coldfield.

Home Instead cares for older people in their own homes, including people living with dementia. Hosting three memory cafes every week, Home Instead provides local families with the chance to attend with their older loved ones, receive advice, and socialise with people facing similar challenges.

The Alzheimer’s Society attends each Home Instead memory cafe once a month and is on hand to help families manage the difficulties of caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s or dementia. Whether families need signposting to local support services or require advice on how to create a safe environment, the team is there to answer questions.

No memory cafe is complete without some fun and laughter. Activities range from table tennis and darts to Love To Move sessions, which use gymnastic foundation skills to get older people moving better, run by a member of the Home Instead Sutton Coldfield team.

Aman Gill, owner of Home Instead Sutton Coldfield, said: "Amongst the laughter at our memory cafes is a sense of relief that you’re not alone. Whatever challenges dementia presents, there are others who have experienced the same struggles and our cafes are a chance for people to share advice on getting through it.

"We know how much staying at home in later life means to people and we’re keen to make that a reality for those requiring care. We don’t just support clients but their families too; it’s so important that they know the best way to help and have the chance to spend quality time with older loved ones."

Home Instead Sutton Coldfield hosts three memory cafes a week: -

  • Monday at Erdington Methodist Church, Wesley Road (off Station Road) B23 6TX 10am - 1pm
  • Tuesday at All Saints Church Centre, Belwell Lane, Four Oaks, B74 4TR, 10am – 1pm
