Sunderland History
Historically a part of County Durham, there were three original settlements on the site of modern-day Sunderland: Monkwearmouth; Bishopwearmouth and a small fishing village called Sunderland.
Over the centuries, Sunderland grew as a port and by the 19th Century, the prot of Sunderland had grown to absorb Monkwearmouth and Bishopwearmouth.
Sunderland was awarded city status in 1992 by the crown and it is currently the biggest city in the North East of England, having the largest population of any city centre, between Leeds and Edinburgh.
In 2008 it was revealed that Sunderland had the highest percentage of broadband and digital television users in the entire United Kingdom.
