Mothers Day - What is it all about?

Traditionally, children thank their mothers for the love and care they have been given throughout the year on Mothers Day and often give cards, small gifts or flowers to mark the occasion.

If you have ever wondered why Mothers Day falls on different dates each year, and sometimes even in different months, you may be interested to know that Mothers Day will always fall on the middle Sunday in Lent (which lasts from Ash Wednesday to the day before Easter Sunday).  Mothers Day has been celebrated in the UK on the 4th Sunday in Lent since at least the 16th Century.  This year Mothers Day is Sunday 10th March 2013.

Mothering Sunday was also known as "refreshment Sunday" or "mid-Lent Sunday" - the reason being it was a day in Lent when fasting rules were relaxed in honour of "The Feeding of the Five Thousand" - a story in the Christian Bible.

With this in mind, treating our Mothers to a meal out on Mothers Day has become a popular tradition for many families.

We are very fortunate that in and around the Stratford upon Avon area we have such a range of establishments to choose from - there is somewhere to suit all tastes and budgets.
