• At the end of June 2004 a new Regulation for electrical safety to make safer homes was announced.
• An average of 10 people die and 750 are seriously injured each year due to accidents in the home caused by unsafe electrical installations.
• The regulations aim to reduce the risk of electrocution in the home and for the first time electrical wiring is within the scope of the Building Regulations.
• All Electrical work in dwellings must meet the Part P requirements and Requirements of Electrical Installations B.S. 7671. In order to do so you have to employ a Part P registered electrician or notify your local council building control 3 days prior to commencing work.
• Light switches and sockets and any other like for like replacement electrical work can be carried out at any time by anyone without notifying your local council, but if you're adding new electric circuits to your house, you'll either have to get Building Control involved OR employ a competent Part P registered Electrician.
• New electrical installations of wiring outside or in the bathroom or kitchen again require either the involvement of Building Control, or the services of a Part P Certicified electrician.
