Mr Phipps (age 43) worked for Halifax over the last 24 years - which was once a building society too - and he takes over from the long-serving and well-respected George Robson who has just retired. He says of the move: “Stafford Railway has remained true to the mutual ideal that first attracted me to this profession and which distinguishes building societies from the banks. More than ever, simple realistic products backed up by a proper individual service that goes the extra mile, have a place in today’s savings market. “It’s a privilege to be part of a successful mutual building society at the heart of its community and which has served its members for 135 years. The mutual model means that we do not have the interests of shareholders to consider - we focus directly and intently on providing our loyal members with an outstanding personal service coupled with consistently competitive mortgage and savings rates.” “The Society is in a very healthy place with a great team of dedicated and experienced staff and a very strong capital base. And more so then ever, consumer views of the service they receive from banks and building societies have swung markedly in favour of building societies and other mutual lenders – so I know I’ve made the right decision. Indeed, we are currently enjoying a sustained increase in lending activity as well as an increase in deposits from savers.” Mr Phipps is married to Alison and has two daughters age 14 and 11. He enjoys foreign holidays and walking the dog, plus he’s a Wolves season ticket holder.
