Our Building
Since Norman times, the centre of Stafford's legal activity was the Shire Hall. The hall has taken several forms - the present building in the Market Square was constructed in 1793 and trials took place here until 1991.

The courtrooms are now open daily as a registered museum.Famous cases tried here include the murder of Christina Collins, killed by boatmen in 1839 by the side of the Trent and Mersey canal at Rugeley and the inspiration for Colin Dexter's Inspector Morse novel 'The Wench is Dead' and the trial of George Edalji,who was falsely accused of the Great Wrley Outrages and eventually set free after the involvement of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in his appeal.Our displays also include the death mask of William Palmer,the notorious Rugeley Poisoner!

Every Sunday afternoon, the Gallery hosts 'Art Cart', an activities trolley that changes with each new exhibition.
'Baby Bounce' runs throughout the Summer, providing fun and nursery rhymes in a stimulating environment.
The Shire Hall Gallery also has a broad schools programme providing a valuable opportunity for pupils to work alongside exhibiting artists as well as hosting mock trials in historic Court One.
