Special funding is available to help disabled children enjoy fun holiday activities, camping trips and much more.

Southend-on-Sea Borough Council has just launched its 2013-2104 grants programme for Short Breaks for Disabled Children.

These grants will help organisations to deliver high quality opportunities for disabled children and young people.

Previously such funding has enabled them to attend summer holiday clubs, after school and weekend activities, and overnight camping.

More than 300 young people have benefited from services like these and the Council is committed to ensuring that they and their families continue to receive a range of support.

Past recipients included:

• Demi, aged ten - who spent his first time away from home at an adventure camping weekend funded by a Short Breaks grant

• The Purple Goat Theatre Company – which was grant funded, so 15 disabled young people rehearsed and performed a production at the Cliffs Pavilion to a very appreciative audience of more than 400 people

• The White Bus Film Club – which has been funded to offer a monthly Saturday Picture Show for families, where the whole family can relax and enjoy films together

• Friends and Places – which is a brand new way for teenagers with disabilities to get matched up with friends and help them access all the activities that young people enjoy – such as bowling, meals out etc.

Southend-on-Sea Borough Council’s Executive Councillor for Children and Learning, Councillor James Courtenay said: “These grants help open the door to a huge variety of exciting activities for disabled children and young people, so we hope people will continue to make the most of them, by submitting their applications.”
