What is Pilates?

Pilates is a mixture of both Yoga and The Alexander Technique.  At myBody Studios in East Boldon, near South Shields, we use The Alexander Technique to address posture and reduce tension in the body and we use Yoga to lengthen the muscles.

Pilates is a 
workout that recognises individual needs and builds strength, with flexibility, without adding bulk.

 During a pilates class, we aim to correct muscle imbalance, faulty muscle recruitment patterns and bad habits in order to bring the body back into alignment.


Pilates Mat Classes

Basic Pilates mat work must be attained before Pilates Machine Work can be introduced. 

Each exercise in a Pilates mat class is based on 8 principles:

      • Relaxation;
      • Co-ordination;
      • Stamina;
      • Alignment;
      • Breathing;
      • Concentration;
      • Centering;
      • Flowing Movements.

Pilates is suitable for everybody regardless of age, fitness level or medical condition.


Pilates Machine Classes

Once you have established good grounding in basic pilates mat work, you can then try pilates machine work.

Pilates Machine Classes are ideal for private clients wishing to progress in pilates to something more challenging and are also suitable 
for remedial exercise programmes following a course of physiotherapy or similar treatment.

During a Pilates Class, you will work with a combination of machines including:

      • The Reformer;
      • Ladder Barrel;
      • Wall Unit;
      • Wunda Chair.
