Birmingham League Finals Day Report

The word momentum was discussed in depth after Saturdays performance and I genuinely feel that after the way we played on Sunday that momentum has changed.

We cruised to a 56 run win against Division One league leaders Ombersley in the semi final, Michael Hill and Alex Phillips built excellent foundations for Sam Reddish, Alec Baker and myself to take us to 166 - 4 from our 20 overs. Ombersley were never in the game, Chris Davidson once again showed how dangerous a bowler he is especially in 20/20 cricket as Ombersley finished on 110 - 9. If Saturday was our worse fielding performance of the season then we pulled out our best fielding performance of the season in this game, we were outstanding and delivered a highly professional performance to make it into the final against Wolverhampton C.C. who had beaten Smethwick comfortably in their semi final.

Losing the toss and fielding first we quickly took control of the game and had Wolverhampton 50-5 including the prize wicket of Indian test overseas player Wasim Jaffer going to Chris Davidson in the 1st over, once again we fielded and bowled exceptionally well although Wolverhampton probably ended on 20 more than they should we were very happy to restrict them to 120-9 from their 20 overs.

Michael Hill was out to his first ball and despite making it harder than we should, we were crowned Birmingham League T20 Champions. Alex Phillips made an outstanding 60* to show his class and Jack Grundy as he has so often this season got us over the line. Every team plays to get to finals days and win trophies, so to pick up the first Birmingham League trophy of the season was a great result and thoroughly well deserved. Thanks to Cannock C.C for hosting an excellent day and everyone who came across to support the team, it made a huge difference. TMH Smithy
