Former footballer Don Goodman, now part of the Sky Sports commentary team, proved an entertaining speaker as The Shrewsbury Club held a successful sporting dinner on the eve of the Aegon GB Pro-Series men's tennis final.

Goodman, whose former clubs include West Bromwich Albion, Sunderland and Wolves, shared stories from his career at the sold-out event at the Sundorne Road venue.

Diners were also treated to the thoughts of former tour professional Adam Wharf, recently appointed Head of Performance Tennis at The Shrewsbury Club.

The guests included Michael Downey, the chief executive of the Lawn Tennis Association, and the Mayor of Shrewsbury, Councillor Beverley Baker.

"It was a really enjoyable evening," said Dave Courteen, the managing director of The Shrewsbury Club. "Don Goodman and Adam Wharf were both engaging speakers and the guests also enjoyed a lovely meal.

"These sporting dinners are always special occasions and have become a real highlight of the weeks when we host professional tennis tournaments.

"We are already looking forward to our next dinner in November and have a few exciting ideas."
