A woman who works for a Shropshire caravan dealership is planning a type of busman’s holiday over Christmas and the New Year.

Michelle Maddox, holiday home sales administrator at Salop Leisure in Shrewsbury, will be waking up on Christmas morning with her husband Andrew and dogs, Lampard and Lilly, in their touring caravan on a small caravan site near Betws-y-Coed in Snowdonia.

The couple, who live in Shrewsbury and have been caravanners for seven years, love the freedom that touring caravan ownership offers and are passionate about exploring the great outdoors.

While most people are unwrapping their Christmas presents in their homes, the Maddoxes will be tucking in to bacon sandwiches and a flask of hot tea before going for a “wild swim” in their wetsuits with their dogs in a chilly Snowdonia lake.

Rather than a traditional turkey lunch, Michelle plans to cook a leg of lamb with all the trimmings in their caravan.

“Our touring caravan is like home from home for us,” she said. “We have central heating, double glazed windows, a shower, a toilet and a fixed bed. We love the freedom of being able to step outside into the countryside. What more could you want?

“On Christmas morning, we will be going for wild swim in our wetsuits in one of the lakes with our dogs, who love swimming. Last year, we went away in the caravan for new year’s eve but this year we decided to go away for Christmas and do some walking, eating nice food and drinking to celebrate the festive season.

“We are Caravan Club members and love to get away to places like the Lake District, Cornwall and Wales.”

Salop Leisure’s chairman Tony Bywater said Michelle and Andrew are typical of modern caravanners who enjoy the freedom of being able to get away for a holiday or weekend break in the countryside any time they please.

“The beauty of modern touring caravans is that they are so warm and comfortable that they can be used all the year round,” he added. “I’m sure Michelle, Andrew and their dogs will have a fantastic Christmas and New Year in their caravan.”
