Although we've not been the worst hit county in the UK, across Salisbury and Wiltshire the daily routine this week has been disrupted by snow and freezing temperatures.
It's important to take extra care at times like this, not just of ourselves but other people.
Please be a good neighbour and check that elderly and vulnerable people living near you have everything they need and aren't cold, cut off or going without provisions. Even if it's just taking the time to stop off for a cup of tea and a chat, it can make all the difference, especially in more rural areas.
As for motorists, there are several things you can do to make your journey safer for you and other road users.
Wiltshire Police have issued the following advice:
For motorists
Keep up-to-date with the weather forecast and road conditions before you set off on your journey.
Avoid travel if possible.
Ensure your vehicle is roadworthy.
Make sure you have full visibility before driving, taking time to de-mist and de-ice all windows
Use your lights.
When the roads are wet and icy, it can take twice as long to stop your vehicle so slow down.
Keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front.
In poor visibility be extra alert for hazards.
Carry warm waterproof clothing, a sleeping bag, food, water and a torch in your vehicle, in case weather conditions mean you have to stop.
Ensure you have plenty of fuel for your journey before you set off
Use the highest gear possible to avoid wheel spin.
Manoeuvre gently and avoid harsh braking and acceleration. If you start to skid, gently ease off the accelerator and avoid braking. If braking is necessary, pump the brakes don’t slam them on.
If you get stuck, stay with your car and tie something brightly coloured to your aerial.
Make sure you have a mobile phone with you and it is fully charged.
Advice for other road users:
For those travelling by means other than a car:
Poor weather conditions mean it can be harder for drivers to see pedestrians and cyclists, so be vigilant and make sure you can be seen however you are travelling, by wearing high visibility clothing.
If cycling, use your lights, and if a pedestrian, use a torch.
