I always used to include one thing each year on my Christmas list: a pony. In fact it would usually appear several times in the same list. Which on average could reach about 50 items long. Not that I was materialistic as a child - let's say I always made the most of a good opportunity.

Needless to say the pony never appeared, except I thought I was close to achieving my dream one catastrophically disappointing year when I unwrapped a lead-rope from my stocking and looked up at my parents with open delight.

"Oh dear" said my mum. "I knew she'd think we'd got her the horse as well"

Two blows in one - just a rope no pony, and Father Christmas didn't really fill my stocking, my parents did.

I'm not sure I ever recovered from that one...

Anyway, ponies and childhood traumas aside, what will you be doing with any old items in your house if they're replaced this Christmas? This year we'll be getting a new toaster after the old one committed rather spectacular suicide, so what to do with the corpse?

Wiltshire Council do provide the resources to recycle pretty much everything, from tins, paper and textiles to electrical goods.

Check out the Wiltshire County website for more information on recycling in your area.

As a friend once said - a white Christmas can still be a green one. Neat.
