On Saturday 29 November 2014, Hallfold United Reformed Church will be playing host to a charity fundraising Lancashire Night.  All proceeds from the evening will be donated to the Charity Fund of the Mayor of Whitworth, Councillor Jim Mellor, which will in turn be shared by worthwhile Whitworth causes at the end of the Mayor’s year in office in May 2015.

The evening will feature songs, poetry and dance and will be hosted by the Whitworth Rushcart Men with special guests including the Britannia Coconut Dancers and Rossendale Clog Heritage.  There’ll also be a fundraising raffle on the night.

Lancashire Day itself is held on 27 November.  Curated by the Friends of Real Lancashire in 1996, it commemorates the day in 1295 when Lancashire sent its first representatives to Parliament by King Edward I of England to attend what later became known as The Model Parliament.  It is open to celebration everywhere within the county, with many towns hosting events on and around the day.

Councillor Jim Mellor, Mayor of Whitworth, says: “I’m a proud son of Lancashire and my family’s roots run deep into Lancashire soil, especially within Whitworth.  The introduction of Lancashire Day is a wonderful idea and it seemed a good idea to celebrate our local traditions and heritage whilst raising money for local good causes at the same time.  I’m indebted to the Rushcart Men, especially Clive Morton and Mark Ambrose, who have worked hard to provide an outstanding line up for the evening.  Unfortunately my wife Susan and I are unable to be at the event as we’ll be attending our daughter’s wedding, but we wish all the organisers all the very best for an entertaining, fun evening and would encourage members of the local community to purchase a ticket.”

The charity fundraising Lancashire Night takes place on Sunday 29 November 2014 at 7.30pm in the hall of Hallfold United Reformed Church, Hall Street, Whitworth, OL12 8TL.  Tickets cost £5 each and can be purchased from Councillor Mellor (01706 854777) and Town Clerk Karen Douglas (01706 852018).
