St Mary’s CE Primary in Rawtenstall is taking bookings for its forest pre-school group. Due to the Lottery funding received through the Community Cash Awards, they are able to offer these sessions for free for the first year.

All sessions are run by a Forest Schools practitioner from Newground (which used to be Groundwork Pennine Lancashire), and TAs from St Mary's CE Primary School.  Groups are on a Monday from 11th November: 10am-11.30am for 2-3 yr olds and parents/carers; 1pm-2.30pm for 3-4 yr olds and parents/carers.  Bookings are being taken for future sessions through the year.

This is an opportunity:

  • for pre-school children to engage with nature, wildlife and the outdoors in a safe environment
  • for new parents to bond with their children taking part in activities together in a safe outdoor environment
  • for new parents to make new bonds within their communities

Activities will revolve around natural play and give opportunities for both parents and children to experience natural play and the benefits of it.  They will also learn new skills so activities they take part in and enjoy can be carried out in time outside of the toddler group.  The sessions will be centred round the children’s development, offering them chances to explore the natural world, develop motor skills, aiding them in independent play and learning.

Examples of activities are outdoor storytelling, mini beast hunts, outdoor cooking, den building, model den building, wild art, mud play, flag making, leaf prints, sensory games, hide and seek.
