John Ryley, head of Sky News, wrote to the three party leaders, saying that “faith in politics and politicians has been shaken, and a debate during the forthcoming election campaign would offer a unique opportunity to re-engage disillusioned voters.”
Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg was quick to confirm he would “relish the opportunity” of the debate, adding that it was “really important to do something different” at a time when faith in politics was so low.
Commenting on the launch of the petition, Sandra said:
“The Liberal Democrats have long championed moves to open up our democracy in new and innovative ways. It’s time we joined the rest of the democratic world and gave people the chance to decide between the party leaders in this way.
“I hope the people of the Test Valley will join me in singing the petition to ensure they have the opportunity to compare the views and values of the three parties in what could be an historic election.”
