Welcome to Furniture Scheme

If you want quality furniture at low cost prices or want to donate furniture in good condition, the charity Funiture Scheme are the people to contact. [Furniture shop - Secondhand dealers - Recycling - Richmond upon Thames]

Richmond Furniture Scheme is a small charitable organisation (Charity No 1133019) set up to help people in need by collecting donated furniture in good condition from the Richmond borough area and reusing it. A small charge is made to those people that are referred. To ensure that all donated furniture is reused and to help make the Scheme more self-sufficient the Scheme is open to sell furniture to all people residing in the Richmond Borough.

There is a part-time co-ordinator who is assisted by two part-time workers and a number of volunteers who run the scheme on a day to day basis.

Why should you use recycled furniture?

In the course of a year each person living in Greater London will create almost half a tonne of waste. If waste continues to grow as it has done over the past decade there will be twice as much to deal with by 2020. Landfilling the waste by burying it in holes in the ground is becoming more difficult in the South East as we run out of space.

In Richmond upon Thames our waste is transported to a landfill site in Bedfordshire. There are also environmental problems as rotting waste creates methane - a powerful greenhouse gas, and can produce leachate (a poisonous liquid).

We cannot sustain our current throw away lifestyle and need to reassess what we do with our waste. It is estimated that up to 1,000 tones of furniture may be thrown away each year in Richmond upon Thames. Beds, chairs, tables and sofas in clean and good condition could all be reused, thereby reducing pollution and improving the quality of life for people on low incomes.

What sort of furniture do we need?

Furniture Scheme needs furniture in good condition including:

  • Beds (single and double)
  • Tables
  • Chairs
  • Settees
  • Armchairs
  • Wardrobes
  • Side-cabinets; etc.

Furniture Scheme cannot accept:

  • Electrical equipment
  • Soft furnishings that do not have the required fire retardant labels
  • Unclean mattresses

How is the furniture collected?

A time is negotiated over the phone for our carrier to come and collect the furniture. We cannot be precise about time but can give you a morning or afternoon slot. When the carrier arrives, he must present you with a small form listing the furniture you have offered.

Any furniture listed that is not taken needs to be crossed out and your initial placed next to the crossed out item. Other items donated but not listed should be added to the list. It is important you sign the form and initial any changes as this provides us with a means of monitoring that all items donated are received by the Furniture Scheme.

At the back of the form is a gift aid form. Should you want to make a contribution towards the cost of collections we should be most grateful. If you are a tax payer you can help us by filling in a gift aid form.

This could mean that for every £1 donated, we can receive 28 pence, so the total value of the donation is £1.28.

Come and visit us between 10am - 3pm Mondays to Thursdays and on the first Saturday of every month 10am - 12pm

Can furniture be delivered to the Furniture Scheme?

Should you be able to deliver the furniture yourself please negotiate a time for delivery. Telephone 020 8755 4665 and make arrangements to leave the furniture when someone is there to receive it.

Any help you give will be a kindness to people in need. Thank you.
