Richmond Council is working with Channel 4 to find families in the borough who want help to reduce the waste they produce and improve how much they recycle every week.
The Council wants to support local people to improve how much they recycle. Every tonne of waste which is recycled rather than sent to landfill saves over £150. Currently the average Richmond upon Thames household produces just over a tonne in waste per year.
Cllr Virginia Morris, Richmond Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment, said: “Having a local family finding out on national TV how easy it can be to reduce waste and recycle more would bring a real boost to everyone else in our borough.
“Already Richmond upon Thames’ residents are among the best recyclers in London, but we think with local peoples’ help, we can claim the top spot. Getting TV exposure with a borough family to help us do that would be a real benefit.”
The TV programme called Super Scrimpers: Waste Not, Want Not, will show families how to reduce their household waste. Experts will look at families’ current levels of waste and what this costs them financially. They will then be given help to try to reduce their waste, and as a result, save money.
