Local history lovers can find out more about the treasures uncovered during the ‘Building of a Borough’ project from the volunteers who helped compile the new online archive.

Over the past 12 months, 40 volunteers worked alongside experts to review and archive over 160 boxes of planning applications – many of which date back to the 1870s.

The selected records were then digitised and uploaded to the online catalogue. The new online catalogue will allow users to search for documents covering a time-span of around 500 years of local history. The present London Borough of Richmond upon Thames comprises the former boroughs of Richmond and Twickenham and Barnes and the Urban District Councils of, Teddington and Hampton.

The project was funded with help from a grant by the Heritage and Lottery Fund.
