Did you know that if you run a business and your staff watch a World Cup football match live on their work computers you could be fined up to £1,000? - unless you have a colour TV licence.
Your staff may unwittingly “drop you in it” if they watch World Cup football (or anything else live on TV) on the company's computers, as you are liable, not your staff.
If you haven’t got a licence but are happy for employees to watch football during their breaks, a way to get round this is for your employees to bring a laptop from home… but the laptop must run on battery power alone – the moment it gets plugged into the mains at work, it is no longer deemed as under their home TV licence and you, the employer, are liable.
During the 2008/09 tax year 160,000 people were fined up to £1,000 for not having the correct TV licence.
