Sugaring is the way forward

by Maud Alleyne, thebestof Reigate

I have had the pleasure to meet with the lovely Susie from Essentials Health, Beauty and Sugaring Centre in Caterham, not far from Reigate and Redhill.

I was intrigued by the following statement...

Sugaring has been voted the No 1 Hair removal. Sugaring is one of the most effective and almost painless form of hair removal. Unlike waxing the pure sugar paste is applied by hand and removed by hand. Sugar paste attaches itslef to the hair not the skin and is therefore recommended to clients with sensitive skins as it produces virtually no reaction.”

I am always sceptical about such statements  - It’s pulling out hair from the root, just like waxing… so how can it be almost painless? How can it possibly give less irritation compared to waxing? And how can it last longer?

So I decided to try it out myself, after all, what harm could it do!?

I was worried that the treatment might be painful but Susie was very professional and it is true - the whole experience was almost painfree and certainly much more relaxing than waxing.

I was so impressed with the results with hardly any redness or swelling and the regrowth period was much longer with much finer hairs.

I am now a convert and very much look forward to my next appointment!

So I did a bit more research into it and here is a summary of what I found.

  • Okay, sugaring, much like waxing, is still pulling out hair from the root, but most people find it less painful simply because sugaring doesn't stick to the skin at all, just the hair. The discomfort is also less because hair is removed in the natural direction of its growth (as opposed to waxing which removes hair against hair growth).

  • Only natural food-derived ingredients are used in sugaring – sugar, water and lemon juice so no worries about any petroleum etc.

  • Sugaring is hypoallergenic and is ideal for sensitive skin. It is a perfect substitute for someone whose skin reacts to waxing.

  • You can never be burned with sugaring as of course the therapist has to handle the paste first!

  • It is such a gentle form of hair removal that it can be performed over varicose veins and even psoriasis.

  • And it also exfoliates the skin in the process!

Saying all that, it is very hard to find a good pro that does real sugaring using the paste, as it takes 6 weeks to train a therapist on sugaring (as supposed to one day for waxing).

Some salons and spas use a wax that has been mixed with sugar, and advertise it as sugaring- but it isn't the same. Very few places offer the real method.

We are very lucky in this area to one of the very few places in the UK offering this treatment. Essentials Health, Beauty and Sugaring Centre in Caterham, near Reigate and Redhill.

I can not recommend the salon and this treatment highly enough.

Give it a try and like me, you will be amazed on how softly and finely your hair grow back but most of all I am staggered at how slowly my hair is growing back.

Lovin' it!
